The state Department of Transportation announced it will suspend most road construction over the Thanksgiving holiday in order to cut down on delays and make driving conditions safer.

Major construction projects along interstate and U.S. routes across the state will be suspended beginning at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 20, until 9 a.m., Monday, Nov. 26.

Narrowed lanes, traffic shifts and work-zone speed limits will still be in effect. The penalty for speeding through a marked work zone is $250.

Transportation officials urged motorists to stay alert, be patient and obey the posted speed limit. They recommended leaving early to get a heard start and traveling at non-peak times. Using alternate routes could help drivers avoid congestion.
