RALEIGH, N.C. — The busiest travel period of the Christmas season begins Friday, and many people are hitting the roads or flying out of the Triangle to be with friends and family.

For those who are traveling by car this holiday season, the North Carolina Department of Transportation has some good news.

According to officials, construction will be suspended in most work zones across the state throughout the weekend and on Monday.

One of those exceptions is Interstate-85 between Vance and Warren Counties, where work will continue.

Travel officials are asking motorists to keep an eye on the weather, as winter storm advisories and warnings are in effect in some parts of the country. Before hitting the road, it's also helpful to check oil and tire pressure.
