HENDERSON, N.C. — Emergency officials in Vance County say an alert North Carolina Department of Transportation employee helped save a driver who crashed into a pond Monday morning along Warrenton Road.

According to Bryant B. Williams, a fire captain, Jay Mozingo was driving down Warrenton Road at about 10 a.m. when he saw a driver lose control of a car, run off the road, down an embankment and into a small pond.

The car came to rest about 30 to 40 feet into the pond.

Mozingo turned around, went to the area where the car left the road and found the crash site. According to Williams, the driver was struggling to stay afloat after escaping from the car.

Mozingo jumped into the water, and with the help of another witness, pulled the driver to safety.

"In today's society, where it seems people turn their eyes away and don't want to get involved, Mr. Mozingo showed that there is still some compassion, some concern and some love for an individual who you have no relationship with," Williams said in a statement.
