— The state Department of Transportation has already spent more than $2.6 million for clearing area highways in recent snowstorms, and some bills have yet to be paid, officials said.

The largest sum, $952,693, was spent in Wake County, followed by $345,035 in Durham County. Costs in Franklin, Granville, Person, Vance and Warren counties were between $252,000 and $277,000 each, officials said.

The numbers include materials, labor and equipment to spray brine solution on highways before the Jan. 29-30 and Feb. 12-13 storms and then clear snow and ice from state roads.
