Krispy Kreme Challenge 2013
RALEIGH, N.C. — With two major events planned in downtown Raleigh Saturday morning, residents and drivers should be wary of making cross-town plans.
The annual Krispy Kreme Challenge will see about 8,000 people attempt to run 5 miles and down a dozen doughnuts all for a good cause. The race, originated in 2004 by a group of students from North Carolina State University, has grown to national recognition.

The challenge begins at 8:30 a.m. at the NC State Belltower on Hillsborough Street and winds runners on a round-trip route to the Krispy Kreme at Peace and Person streets and back. Thousands of spectators line the streets to take in the spectacle, which includes a costume contest.

At the same time, the state NAACP is planning a prayer service, march and rally near the State Capitol. The assembly will gather at about 9 a.m. on Wilmington Street at South Street, then march north on Wilmington to Davie to Fayetteville Street. Speeches there are expected to last until about noon.

An upper level disturbance moving in from the southwest has the potential to bring some rain, sleet and even snow showers to the Triangle Saturday morning, WRAL Meteorologist Mike Maze said.

"This system could produce a light dusting of snow on grassy and elevated surfaces, but by lunchtime the precipitation will come to an end," he said.

Temperatures will start in the mid-30s on Saturday morning, but climb to near 40 degrees by lunchtime.
