Duke University received a record $410.9 million in philanthropic contributions in the past year, the school reported Thursday.
Posted — UpdatedThe amount given between July 1, 2012, and June 30, 2013, marked a 17 percent increase over the previous year and broke a 2007-08 record of $385.7 million.
"The generosity of our alumni and friends will move this university forward," Duke President Richard H. Brodhead said in a statement. "All of us at Duke are profoundly grateful for their support, which will benefit Duke students and faculty today and in the future, giving them access to resources and opportunities that enable them to engage with the world's most pressing challenges.”
Philanthropists Anne T. and Robert M. Bass, of Fort Worth, Texas, made the largest single gift to the university last year. Their $50 million contribution will launch Bass Connections, an initiative to encourage students and faculty to collaborate on issues of societal importance.
