Don't have your Christmas tree yet? Find out where to cut your own

Find out where you can cut your own tree in the Triangle!

NC Christmas trees snapped up

I grew up in rural upstate New York where you'd find Christmas tree farms on just about every corner (which is only a slight exaggeration). Every year, my family would trudge through the snow to find the perfect tree. My dad would cut it down and haul it back to the car.

We'd go home for some hot apple cider and an afternoon of decorating (while my dad watched the game). Childhood memories ...

In North Carolina, you'll find more Christmas tree farms in the mountains of western North Carolina. Many families travel there for Christmas tree weekends, staying at inns or motels, picking their tree at a local farm and driving it home.

In fact, North Carolina is the second-leading producer of Christmas trees in the United States, says an article on VisitNC.com. More than 90 percent of the state's trees are Fraser firs, it says.
If you're interested in a Christmas tree mountain excursion, go to the North Carolina Christmas Tree Association's website for details.
There are some local tree farms in the Triangle too. A big thank you to some of our WRAL Go Ask Mom Facebook fans for helping me to compile this list. If you know of other farms in the region that are not on this list, please include in the comments and I'll add it to the list.

Farmers I spoke with on Monday said they still have plenty of trees, though it's always best to call ahead before you go. Phone numbers are listed when a farm doesn't have a website or Facebook page. (And while I know this post might be a week or two too late for many of you with trees already this year, I know there are others, like me, who wait until it's a bit closer to Christmas.)

Local Christmas Tree Farms (in no particular order)
Boyce Farms, Raleigh.
Jordan Lake Christmas Tree Farm, Apex (in Chatham County).
Mistletoe Meadows, Garner. The farm's main location is in Laurel Springs, N.C., but they took over the former Pop-N-Son tree farm in Garner after that family-run farm's two founders died.

Griffin's Evergreens, Sanford. 919-258-3587.

Corn Hill Farms, Kittrell (about nine miles south of Oxford).

Doby Tree Farm, Cameron. 910-245-3265.

Teri-Jim's Christmas Trees, Dudley. 919-735-8140.
