FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The board of the Dogwood Festival has voted to allow churches to sponsor booths at the 2009 event, organizers said Friday.

The move comes after some people claimed the festival held last April discriminated against churches by not allowing them as vendors.

Organizers said at the time they were enforcing an existing rule after receiving complaints from festival attendees of churches pushing religious materials on them and from food vendors about churches giving away food and drinks.

The festival board said churches and political groups would be allowed to apply as non-profit vendors for the 2009 Dogwood Festival, scheduled for April 24-26, 2009. Guidelines for the applications will be made public in November, organizers said.
