ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A group of animal-rescue volunteers are offering a $700 reward to find out who is responsible for fatally shooting a dog in the stomach over the weekend.

Lisa Caddell says she and her husband found a brown female pitbull-mix Sunday afternoon in Rocky Mount's Sunset Park.

By the time animal-rescue volunteers were able to get the dog to an emergency veterinary clinic in Wilson, the animal had gone into shock and had to be euthanized.

Before doing so, they named her "Little Mama," because it was apparent that she had recently had puppies.

Little Mama appeared to be about 2 years old. She had on a blue collar but could not be identified.

"It infuriates me that somebody got away with this," Caddell said. "I'd like to see them punished."

Anyone with information that could help investigators should call 252-972-1411.
