A group of animal-rescue volunteers are offering a $700 reward to find out who is responsible for fatally shooting a dog in the stomach over the weekend.

Lisa Caddell says she and her husband found a brown female pitbull-mix Sunday afternoon in Rocky Mount's Sunset Park.

By the time animal-rescue volunteers were able to get the dog to an emergency veterinary clinic in Wilson, the animal had gone into shock and had to be euthanized.

Before doing so, they named her "Little Mama," because it was apparent that she had recently had puppies.

Little Mama appeared to be about 2 years old. She had on a blue collar but could not be identified.

"It infuriates me that somebody got away with this," Caddell said. "I'd like to see them punished."

Anyone with information that could help investigators should call 252-972-1411.

I say who ever is found to be responsible needs to be shot in the stomach ,and left to die, as they did for this poor dog. NO SYMPATHY FOR THIS KIND OF ACTION..Praying for the soul of "Mama" and for the puppies she left behind.

I am not saying the dog deserved to die in any way. But out of everything horrible something positive must come out of it. Perhaps, this dog died to remind all of us to handle our dogs in a responsible manner. The dog had to be running loose to get shot, otherwise the owner would have been there to defend the dog. When your dog is running loose, unsupervised you as the owner are responsible for the dog. Maybe the reward should be out for the owner who allowed the dog to run loose. The dogs owner has not come forward to my knowledge. If that was my dog I would come forward to give the dog a proper burial.

Just because it was part Pit does not give it a death sentence, If she did attack, there could of been many reasons, 1) if she had puppies she could of been protecting them, however, there have been more animal cruetly issues lately, there is a story about a dog whom was also found shot wandering with her sister, a rescue group save them both and they repaid the favor and saved a person from dying, the breed of them are Rottiweiler, shepherd mixes and they are the sweetest loving dogs. Do some research the top dog that actually bites but it is never reported is a Dachshund, but the news only reports when a large dog bites...... any dog can attack, its all based on how it is treated.

"It was part pit bull. I'm sure it attacked something. They are the most dangerous dogs ever and should be illegal." - Monkey_Joe Exactly!!!!!!!!!

Really? Because it sounds to me like a human with a gun attacked the dog.
