Dog, bat test positive for rabies

A dog in Garner believed to be infected with the virus was euthanized Monday and taken to the State Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh for testing. Test results confirming rabies were returned Tuesday.

Four people who had contact with the dog are being treated for rabies, Wake County officials said.

In Fayetteville, a dead bat found last week in a yard in Palomar Street also tested positive for rabies.

The bat is the fifth case of rabies in Cumberland County since January 1, officials said.

Residents are reminded to use caution when dealing with animals that are behaving unusually or with pets that may have come into contact with rabid animals. 

Wear gloves and other protective clothing when helping injured pets, and stay away from bodily fluids, especially saliva. Officials also urge residents to have their pets vaccinated against the disease.

Anyone who may have come into contact with a rabid animal or finds a wild animal indoors should call local animal control authorities immediately.
