— A state Department of Correction employee faces charges for leaving loaded guns in a house where a 15-year-old accidentally shot himself, according to arrest warrants.

Battista Louise Lassiter, 29, of 6612 Lake Hill Drive, was arrested Nov. 29 on charges of felony child abuse inflicting serious injury, possession of a weapon of mass destruction and misdemeanor child abuse.

The warrants say that on Nov. 28, Lassiter left the teen and her 3-year-old daughter alone in her house for 11½ hours. The teen got access to a sawed-off shotgun and another loaded firearm, then accidentally shot himself in the foot.

Looks like Battista is going to be a "guest" of the DOC rather than an employee! Wonder how the other inmates will treat her?

"possession of a weapon of mass destruction? Could someone please explain that to me?"

Here in NC if a shotgun (or rifle) is under a certain length it is considered a WMD.

"any shotgun with a barrel length less than eighteen (18) inches or an overall length of less than twenty-six (26) inches;"

"I'm no gun expert but why do you need a SAWED OFF shotgun in the first place?? I would think the shotgun would be beneficial not sawed off too!

It's easier to carry and conceal when it's sawed off. Not least, when it's fired it covers a MUCH wider area.

I'm surprised she wasn't charged with possession of a weapon of mass destruction.
