DMV: Pair illegally issued auto titles in Harnett

Posted February 3, 2012

— The state Division of Motor Vehicles has closed an office in Harnett County and charged two employees with illegally issuing scores of vehicle titles.

The DMV closed the Lillington License Plate Agency, at 1190 N. Main St., on Thursday after an internal review turned up wrongdoing, spokeswoman Marge Howell said Friday. The DMV has contracted with the private office since June 2010 to handle vehicle registration, title transactions and other services.

Lynetta Greene, 35, of 170 Woodbridge Drive in Spring Lake, was charged with 260 counts each of felony title fraud, felony accessing a government computer to defraud and misdemeanor registration fraud.

Janet Faye McLean, 57, of 1003 S. Second St. in Lillington, was charged with 113 counts each of felony title fraud, felony accessing a government computer to defraud and misdemeanor registration fraud.

The women were using expired driver's licenses or individual taxpayer identification numbers to title vehicles, Howell said.

In 2006, North Carolina began requiring people to present their Social Security numbers to obtain a driver's license and vehicle documents to prevent fraud.

Authorities haven't yet determined how much the women profited from the alleged scheme.

The investigation into the office's operations is ongoing, and more charges are possible, Howell said.

The state should be running DMV offices not a bunch of Local Yokels.

DMV is a state agency. The DMV offices should be state owned and ran. Dealing with the local yokel DMV people is often like dealing with fast food employees.

If they got money from this, prosecute them. Otherwise, warn them and get on with it. Why is a license no longer a valid id when it's past the expiration date? It's got your picture, other identifying information. I know you can't drive with an expired license, but you don't need to have a driver's license to purchase a vehicle, only to drive one.

No one will ever convince me that Janet McLean is guilty of any of the alleged charges. No way! I know her and have done business with her and still had to provide 2 forms of ID or no transaction would be made.

I have known Janet for many years. They will never get anyone that knows her to believe this. They better have some solid proof. I dont why some people have to bring race into this. This is about knowing someone for along time and believing in them until PROVEN guilty.

Your right and she would go out of her way to help fix problems and would tell you who made the mistake so you could get it fixed. I'm like others that knew her and I think there is a lot more to this story.

Well it sad for those involved, but the law is what it is. I believe one lady been doing this for over 30 years and really should know better. Hard press to think she was doing this for financal gain. Maybe just mis-guild effort at helping. Lets let the court decide.

Good job authorities...why has everybody gotten so lazy and greedy. Our ancestors would be so ashamed of our citizens today. So many are an embarassment to what they fought for...including these two!!!

According to their own webpage, NC DMV does not require SS# for vehicle registration but you need one to get the driver's license.
