DMV closes Robeson plate office amid fraud probe
The state Division of Motor Vehicles has closed a license plate agency in Robeson County after two employees and a third person were charged with fraud, officials said Thursday.
Posted — UpdatedA month-long investigation into the St. Pauls agency, at 210 W. Blue St., which contracts with the state to provide vehicle registration services, title transactions and license plate renewals, by DMV License and Theft Bureau inspectors led to the closure Wednesday and the Thursday morning arrests.
Agency manager Edna Muse was charged with 24 felony counts each of title fraud and accessing a government computer for fraud and two counts of aiding and abetting notary fraud..
Employee Cynthia Taylor was charged with 136 counts each of title fraud and accessing a government computer for fraud, 74 counts of aiding and abetting notary fraud and 110 misdemeanor counts of using fraud in the application for a vehicle title.
Also, Marlene Renvill, an employee of North Carolina Insurance Services of Red Springs, was charged with six counts each of title fraud and aiding and abetting notary fraud and two counts of obtaining property by false pretense.
All three women were released on bond.
Officials declined to provide details of the investigation, which they said would likely lead to more charges.
Area residents needing to use a license plate agency can go to one at 220 N. Chestnut St. in Lumberton or 5537 McPhail St. in Hope Mills, officials said.
