MORRISVILLE, N.C. — Allegiant Air will begin serving Raleigh-Durham International Airport in May with six weekly flights to Florida, officials said Tuesday.

The discount airline will offer nonstop service to Orlando-Sanford International Airport and Punta Gorda airport outside of Ft. Myers and Naples on Thursdays and Sundays. Nonstop service to St. Petersburg-Clearwater Airport near Tampa will be available on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The airline will serve the routes with a combination of Airbus and MD-80 aircraft, averaging 170 seats, out of Terminal 2.

“Allegiant Air is a great addition to the variety of air carriers currently operating at RDU,” airport President and Chief Executive Michael Landguth said in a statement. “Allegiant is a well-respected travel company that focuses on providing not only flights but also complete vacation packages to leisure destinations, which will greatly benefit the residents of our region.”

Allegiant is the first new carrier to begin operations at RDU in nine years, and the three Florida airports bring the total number of nonstop destinations at RDU to 42.
