SMITHFIELD, N.C. — A former real estate attorney in Clayton pleaded guilty Monday to stealing more than $1 million from clients.

Jennifer Green-Lee was sentenced to a minimum of five years in prison on 13 counts of embezzlement stemming from the 2011 crimes.

Prosecutors said Green-Lee took money she received for real estate transactions and put it to personal use. Many of the victims lost large sums of money as well as homes they believed they had purchased.

"I am pleased that the defendant accepted responsibility and acknowledged the financial pain and suffering that she inflicted upon these victims," Johnston County District Attorney Susan Doyle said in a statement.

Green-Lee was also sentenced to five years of probation.
