FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said Saturday that it is investigating a threat of violence at Pine Forest High School.

Investigators said they were made aware of the threat via citizen complaints after seeing the messages on Facebook and Twitter Saturday morning. The threats were first posted on Edmodo, an educational social networking site, then shared.

The sheriff's office said it will be on the school campus next week to ensure student safety.

As a precaution, school officials canceled a dance that was scheduled for Saturday night.

"Cumberland County Schools did receive the threat on social media about Pine Forest High School. We have not been able to determine if the threat was real," Patricia Hollingsworth, communications director for Cumberland County Schools, said in a statement. "The sheriff's office is investigating the incident, and the Edmodo representatives are working with us to get more information about the post."

Investigators encourage anyone who may know who sent the messages to contact the sheriff's office at 910-323-1500.
