Detectives: 'Family friend' raped teen girl
A Scotland Neck man faces charges that he raped a teenage girl several times over the past seven months.

Detective Tyree Davis, with the Halifax County Sheriff's Office, filed charges against Douglas Aaron Smith, 29, after investigating a rape report received Monday.
Investigators said that Smith was a long-time friend of the girl's family. The reported rapes occurred when the victim was 14- and 15-years-old.
Smith was charged with two counts of statutory rape of a 15-year-old and one count each of statutory rape of a 14-year-old and statutory sex offense with a 15-year-old.
Smith surrendered to Scotland Neck police Wednesday when he learned warrants were out for his arrest. He was transferred to the custody of the sheriff's office and was being held under a $50,000 bond Thursday. His first court appearance was set for July 29.
According to state Department of Correction records, Smith was placed on probation for assault on a female in March. He was also convicted of simple assault in 1997.
