Detectives: 'Family friend' raped teen girl

Posted July 16, 2009

— A Scotland Neck man faces charges that he raped a teenage girl several times over the past seven months.

Detective Tyree Davis, with the Halifax County Sheriff's Office, filed charges against Douglas Aaron Smith, 29, after investigating a rape report received Monday.

Investigators said that Smith was a long-time friend of the girl's family. The reported rapes occurred when the victim was 14- and 15-years-old.

Smith was charged with two counts of statutory rape of a 15-year-old and one count each of statutory rape of a 14-year-old and statutory sex offense with a 15-year-old.

Smith surrendered to Scotland Neck police Wednesday when he learned warrants were out for his arrest. He was transferred to the custody of the sheriff's office and was being held under a $50,000 bond Thursday. His first court appearance was set for July 29.

According to state Department of Correction records, Smith was placed on probation for assault on a female in March. He was also convicted of simple assault in 1997.

landshark, I know very well about marrying early. My Mom, who is almost 84, married when she was 17. And my Dad was 26 at the time. Many people keep saying men should know not to mess with an underaged girl. But honestly, I have seen many mid-teen girls that could EASILY pass for 20 to 25.

By the way, I'm not defending this guy. He was a family friend, so he DEFINITELY knew how old this girl was.

Just disgusting. Lock up this criminal and throw away the key.

$50,000 bond? That's it? Must not have been too bad

DeathRow, somethings else I try to keep in mind also. Maybe you thought of this also. Early on in the forming of this nation when peoples life expectancy was not as long as it is now. It was not uncommon or even against the law, for young girls to marry at an early age.

Maybe because it is part of our pass nature. We must work harder to prevent getting into these situations?

Deathrow you're right about the law. Still it is a serious matter for a man his age to be having sex with a young girl. I also like to keep in mind that for what ever reason, these young ladies today are putting themselves in these situations for more than it seem they did just a few years also? For the life of me I just can't get my mind around the reason why? Last week it was a female teacher 28 plus years old and a 10 year old boy.

There is no excuse for a 29 year old wanting a 14 or 15 whether is a Male /Female. I don't know this continued and the Mother didn't have a clue.

With "friends" like that who needs any enemies???

The article actually makes it sound like he forcibly raped the girl. But then says he was charged with Statutory Rape. Everyone should know that ANY sexual encounters with a person under 18 is a criminal offense. My point being, this man isn't as bad as a Rapist who forces their victim. It was probably consentual. I'm not defending this man for having sex with an underage victim. I'm simply saying don't lump Statutory Rapists in with Rapists who force their victims.

A 29 year old going for a 14 then 15 year old? That's an evil person and needs to be dealt with accordingly. He doesn't need to be a part of a free society.
