Go Ask Mom

Destination: Table tennis at Lake Lynn

Posted September 22

The center is on Ray Road in north Raleigh.

Here's a quick diversion if you happen to be in north Raleigh.

Lake Lynn Community Center at 7921 Ray Rd. has the city's first and only outdoor table tennis table, which is available for the public to use. The table sits under the overhang in the back of the center within sight of the park's playground.

You can bring your own equipment or, inside the center, check a backpack, which includes rackets and balls. You'll just need to leave a photo ID at the front desk if you want to check out the equipment. It's all free to use.

My daughters and I spent about 20 minutes having a blast hitting balls on Thursday. We all found out we're pretty horrible table tennis players, but that didn't really matter.

The table is an especially great addition for those of us with older and younger kids. While younger siblings play on the playground, older ones or parents can, together, play a little table tennis.

Lake Lynn also features about three miles of walking trails, a batting cage, an indoor basketball court, tennis courts and a bocce ball court, among other amenities.

This isn't the first public outdoor table tennis table in the Triangle. Cary also has one in its new Downtown Park. (Share if you know of others).

Go Ask Mom features places to take kids every Friday. For more, check our posts on parks and playgrounds and Triangle family destinations.
