Pastries from Chanticleer Cafe & Bakery

Very soon after Chanticleer Cafe & Bakery opened earlier this year, I got to sample the goods. My husband drove by the restaurant in Cary and pulled up to the door, only to see that it was closed.

But a man, loading up a truck with goodies, stopped him and asked him if he liked chocolate. Um ... yes?! The man offered some pastries for my husband to take home, including some buttery chocolate croissants. Let's just say, we were immediately hooked. (And what an awesome gesture!).

I finally got to see the place for myself a couple of weeks ago, bringing my girls and a friend in tow. We were there to sample the treats. It was hard to pick, but we settled on an apple pie cookie, another chocolate croissant, a bear claw, a ghost cupcake (chocolate cake with vanilla icing) and a cheese Danish to take home for my husband. The total came to about $15 for all five pastries, plus a coffee - a reasonable price for a delicious early afternoon treat.

But it's not just about dessert here. The spot, open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., offers a breakfast and lunch menu with panini, salads, sandwiches and more. The kids' menu, with all items for $4.95, includes sandwiches like a Nutella and strawberry jam and comes with a drink and a choice of apple slices or chips.

The seating area is open and airy, with tables and chairs and a few couches.

Here's what makes this place even better: It's within walking distance of the great Kids Together Playground (which I write about this very day!). This is a great place to fill up before a morning of play or to wind down for lunch or a treat. Better yet, you could get your food to go and enjoy it at the park.

Chanticleer Cafe & Bakery is at 6490 Tryon Rd., Cary.
