Design, clean energy combine in convention center exhibit
Challenged by Cree to define emerging energy-efficient technologies, local designers came up with a series of icons representative of LED lighting, geothermal energy, solar farms, hybrid cars and more.

Now Cree will present those images, in much-larger-than-life size, as an art installation at the Raleigh Convention Center. Visitors will pass underneath the mounted icons as they travel from the indoor pedestrian walkway from the Raleigh Marriott to the convention center.
“By showcasing these beautiful symbols in a high-traffic area of the Raleigh Convention Center, we’re giving visitors a glimpse of the technologies that are helping the world save energy. And innovation in one of those technologies, LED lighting, is happening right here in the Research Triangle region by Cree,” said convention center Director of Marketing Laurie Okun.
Cree originally collaborated with The Noun Project, which helps design civic symbols by organizing Iconathons around the country, to develop a universal symbol representing LED lighting. The idea was to give the public and the media a replacement for the antiquated Edison or swirly Compact Fluorescent (CFL) bulb designs that are often used to symbolize lighting.
