RALEIGH, N.C. — A routine vehicle stop ended with a Wake County deputy tackling a suspect on a high-school football field on Friday, officials said.

The deputy tried to stop a vehicle on Litchford Road in Raleigh just before 1 p.m. When the driver refused to stop, a small chase ensued.

The driver, Timothy Scullen, 32, wrecked his vehicle near Millbrook High School on Spring Forest Road. Officials said Scullen ran onto the Millbrook High School football field, where the deputy and three school-resource officers tackled him.

Scullen was arrested for felony speeding to elude arrest and possession of marijuana. He was placed in the Wake County Jail.

Scullen was on probation following a conviction for driving while impaired in September 2007, according to the state Department of Correction records. He was also convicted of a drug offense in 1998.
