SPRING LAKE, N.C. — Sheriff's deputies were searching for a man who tried to rob a Spring Lake bank Wednesday afternoon but was frightened off by a pager.

Investigators said the man brandished a semi-automatic handgun and demanded money from the tellers at Bank of America, 1109 N. Bragg Blvd. The sound of a pager, however, spooked him, and he fled the scene without taking any money.

The man was last seen going down Chapel Hill Road.

Detectives described the attempted robber as a young black man, standing 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing 130 to 140 pounds. He wore a gray hooded sweatshirt and a black ski mask and carried a black backpack.

Anyone with information about the man was urged to call the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office at 910-323-1500.
