Democrat-endorsed candidate wins county school board race

Posted August 30

— A candidate endorsed by Democrats has won a resounding victory for a school-board seat in Virginia's largest school district.

Karen Keys-Gamarra won 59 percent of the vote in Tuesday's special election to fill an at-large seat on the 12-member Fairfax County school board.

Chris Grisafe, who was endorsed by local Republicans, won 30 percent of the vote.

Two other candidates were on the ballot. Michael Owens received 2 percent of the vote, and Sandra Allen received 1 percent.

County officials reported 10 percent turnout on a rainy Tuesday.

The school board found itself in the national spotlight last month when it voted to change the name of JEB Stuart High School amid complaints that the Confederate general was not worthy of the honor.
