Delivery man shot in the leg in attempted carjacking in Tower Grove South

Posted August 8

— A food delivery man was shot while making a stop in south St. Louis. It happened just before 10 p.m. Sunday on the 3900 block of Humphrey St. in the Tower Grove South neighborhood.

The 27-year-old delivery man has been treated and released from the hospital. St. Louis Metropolitan Police are looking for two, young male suspects who ran from the scene after the shooting after attempting to steal the delivery man's car.

Tyler Orf lives on the block where the shooting happened.

"I heard a gunshot, and I looked out the window right as two young black males ran down the street and there was a commotion outside along with a bunch of the other neighbors to see what was going on," said Orf.

Orf said when he came outside at first, the victim attempted to move his vehicle.

"I would assume he was in shock or something because he got back in his car which was parked in front of a fire hydrant, had the flashers on, and moved it down the street a little bit," said Orf.

Just after this, Orf said the victim called his boss to say he couldn't make his last delivery.

Orf said the police on-scene told him this was a crime of opportunity, explaining, "people look for people sitting in their car, not paying attention, that have their flashers on, that have their head down on their phone, and they basically kind of sneak up on you and try to rob you and steal your car," said Orf.

Police reports show that armed assaults are down 50 percent in Tower Grove South compared to this time last year.

"I think everybody is a little shaken up," said Orf.

Since these kinds of assaults are relatively uncommon, Orf says he still feels safe in this neighborhood and believes the crime is not from people who live in the area.

"I know my neighbors are good people and I'm not worried about them. I think it's a bad element maybe coming into the neighborhood at certain times," said Orf.

News 4 reached out the Alderwoman Megan Green, who represents the ward where the shooting happened. She said she's working with the Neighborhood Liaison Officer to address any crime concerns in the area.
