Delegation members back contraception effort for wild horses

Posted November 23

— Members of Arizona's congressional delegation are asking federal officials to permit administration of conception vaccine to wild horses that roam along the Salt River on the Phoenix area's eastern outskirts.

A letter signed by six U.S. representatives asks that the Forest Service allow advocacy groups to conduct a fertility control program to "humanely limit population growth" to protect the herd and its health.

According to advocacy groups, the contraception could be administered with darts and restrict the herd's population to a size that eliminates any need to remove horses.

Lawmakers who signed the letter are Republicans Trent Franks, Paul Gosar, Matt Salmon and Martha McSally and Democrats Kyrsten Sinema and Raul Grijalva.

Tonto National Forest spokeswoman Carrie Templin said Wednesday she hadn't seen the letter and had no immediate comment.
