Decorated Fort Bragg soldier dies from gunshot wound

A decorated paratrooper stationed at Fort Bragg died March 7 after sustaining a gunshot wound, base officials said in a release Wednesday.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. — A decorated paratrooper stationed at Fort Bragg died March 7 after sustaining a gunshot wound, base officials said in a release Wednesday. 

The cause of Spc. Donovan Batterson's death is under investigation, but officials said foul play is not expected. No information about the shooting was released.

Batterson, 21, of Lodi, Calif., was an infantryman with the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team. 

He joined the Army in June 2010 and served one combat tour in Afghanistan from February to September 2012. 

Batterson’s awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with one campaign star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the NATO medal, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Parachutist Badge.

No other information about his death was immediately available.
