December delight: 70s and sun in forecast

High temperatures across central North Carolina could reach the mid-70s by the weekend, the culmination of a week-long warm-up that could leave residents reaching for the summer clothes.

RALEIGH, N.C. — High temperatures across central North Carolina could reach the mid-70s by the weekend, the culmination of a week-long warm-up that could leave residents reaching for the summer clothes.

"We'll be feeling very un-December-like by Saturday," said WRAL Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel.

Thursday's forecast high was for 66 degrees, but after that the temperatures climb to 70 and beyond for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The normal high temperature for mid-December is in the mid-50s, according to WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss. The coolest Dec. 12 on record was 10 degrees in 1957. The warmest (in 2007) reached 79 degrees.

"Our expected highs are trending well above normal, but so far it doesn't appear we'll threaten the record values," Moss said.
