RALEIGH, N.C. — Wake County commissioners on Monday approved the purchase of 44 acres of an old tobacco farm for a new school in Fuquay-Varina.

The county will spend about $50,000 an acre for the site, and the deal should be final in early November.

In recent months, county Commissioners have accused the Wake County Board of Education of being willing to pay too much for future school sites. Deals for sites in Rolesville and Apex collapsed because of the dispute between the school board and commissioners.
