Don't forget: Spring forward Saturday night

The dark days of winter are almost over.

Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 8, at 2 a.m.

In the annual ritual, most of the United States (and 70 countries around the world) lose an hour of sleep to gain an hour of daylight in the evening.

The switch always occurs on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November, which means it's back to Standard Time on Nov. 3.

A safety reminder

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission urges consumers to use the semi-annual clock change as a reminder to test and replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.

In addition to changing or checking your smoke alarm battery, N.C. Insurance Commissioner and State Fire Marshal Mike Causey suggests the following fire safety tips:

  • Place a smoke alarm on every level of your home outside sleeping areas. If you keep bedroom doors shut, place a smoke alarm in each bedroom.
  • Teach children what the smoke alarm sounds like and what to do when they hear it.
  • Prepare and practice an escape plan — know at least two ways out of a room, crawl low under smoke and plan where to meet outside.
