Danes chosen to lead EU fight against corruption in Ukraine

Posted September 15

— Danish Foreign Minister Kristian Jensen says his country has been chosen to lead the European Union's new 16 million-euro ($18 million) program against corruption in Ukraine.

Jensen says he will make the official announcement during a visit to Kiev on Friday, together with EU Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn.

Describing corruption as "a substantial challenge in Ukraine, in the daily life of both businesses and citizens," Jensen noted in a statement dated Wednesday that Denmark "is No. 1 of the least corrupt countries ... (and) we would like to help Ukraine in their efforts to improve their position," which he said currently stood at number 130.

It was not immediately clear if someone will be appointed to head the program.
