Great Danes to be put down after attack

— A Cumberland County man whose two Great Danes mauled a neighbor during her evening jog a week ago has been cited with violations of county animal control ordinances, authorities said Monday.

Monica Stephenson, 47, was jogging near her home on Sunnyfield Lane in Linden on March 19 when the two dogs owned by Scot Nesbitt got loose, chased after her and attacked her, said John Lauby, director of Cumberland County Animal Control.

Stephenson was listed in fair condition late last week at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, where she was airlifted following the mauling.

Nesbitt was cited with two instances each of negligently allowing a domestic animal to run at large and a dog biting a human causing injury that requires professional medical or hospital treatment. The first offense carries a $100 fine, while the latter carries a $500 fine.

Animal Control took custody of a male and a pregnant female Great Dane immediately after the attack, and Lauby said the dogs were put down the following day.

Hopefully they'll also be on the hook for all her medical bills. That'll be a little more than a slap.
