— Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office promoted a new second-in-command Wednesday, welcoming its first African-American chief deputy.

Ennis Wright, a veteran of the sheriff’s office since 1997 when he joined as a road patrol officer, was promoted in an official pinning ceremony Wednesday morning.

Wright rose to the rank of captain of operations in the sheriff’s office in 2006, eventually becoming major of that unit.

Wright has been married to Trudy Lee Wright for 23 years. They have two sons, one daughter and four grandchildren.
