Cumberland County man, woman charged with child abuse

A Cumberland County man and woman were charged with child abuse Thursday after a nine-year-old told her teacher that she was dragged out from under her bed and beaten with a belt buckle.

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, N.C. — A Cumberland County man and woman were charged with child abuse Thursday after a nine-year-old told her teacher that she was dragged out from under her bed and beaten with a belt buckle.

Detectives arrested and charged Kimberly Hayes, 32, with two counts of child abuse inflicting serious physical injury and two counts misdemeanor child abuse.

Roy Pierce, 41, was also charged with child abuse inflicting serious physical injury.

The child said her older brother and younger sister were also beaten during this incident, which the siblings confirmed.

Both defendants were booked into the Cumberland County Detention Center. Hayes was being held under a $30,000 unsecured bond and Pierce received a $10,000 unsecured bond.
