FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — An 8-year-old girl suffered serious injuries Friday afternoon when she was hit by a car near the intersection of Cedar Creek and Tabor Church roads, according to the state Highway Patrol, which was investigating the incident.

Troopers said the child ran out ahead of her mother as she tried to cross the road to a friend's house and into the path of a gold Honda Odyssey.

A family member said the little girl's name is LaMiya McLaughlin and that she is in the second grade at Seabrook Elementary School.

The child was airlifted to UNC Hospitals, where troopers said she was in critical condition.
