The Wake Board of Commissioners on Monday elected Republican Joe Bryan as chairman for 2013 and Republican Phil Matthews as vice chairman.

"I’m honored to serve as chair for the third time and have another opportunity to lead this team through the challenges ahead," Bryan said in a statement. "It's my goal to re-establish and restore important partnerships with the school system as we move forward on education bonds for next fall.”

The board also swore in new Commissioner Caroline Sullivan and incumbents Betty Lou Ward and James West for new terms.

In Fayetteville, the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners unanimously elected Jimmy Keefe as its new chairman.

Keefe, who was vice chairman this past year, replaces outgoing chairman Marshall Faircloth. Commissioner Jeannette Council was unanimously selected vice chairwoman for 2013.

Keefe served the Fayetteville City Council from 2001 to 2005 and was elected to the Board of Commissioners in 2008. Council was elected to the board in 2000 and has twice served as chairwoman.
