There is a special connection that a broadcaster can have with a local fan base. When a fan turns on their TV or radio, they are inviting the broadcaster into their lives and homes. Those moments of watching games become memories for us as fans, and the voice of the broadcaster often provides the lyrics to the music.

When Hartford Whalers stepped foot in North Carolina and became the Carolina Hurricanes, Tripp Tracy has been the color analyst for the team. And for every broadcast Tracy has been one thing – Authentic. He’s honest, knowledgeable, and fair with his assessments.

On this week’s edition of Culture State, Tracy talks about his deep connection with the Caniacs. Fans online have come to appreciate the energy and honesty Tracy brings, but also some of the traits that makes him unique and special. Most notably, the ‘Huge Caniacs.’ Whether it’s Chewbacca or Dua Lipa, they are all ‘Huge Caniacs.’

Actually, we’ll let Hayes Permar and the SportsChannel8 crew tell you about all of the Huge Caniacs.

Tracy tells a story of back in 2019 after the Canes had just swept the New York Islanders to move on to the Eastern Conference Finals, where he found himself on Glenwood South in Raleigh enjoying the night. While walking down Glenwood, several young professionals stopped Tracy to say how they grew up watching the Canes as kids, and how they still enjoy listening to Tracy as part of the broadcast. And that meant a lot to him.

He loves that Canes and all of the great Caniacs out there, and the feeling is mutual.
