Zebulon, N.C. — Eastbound U.S. Highway 264 was closed Thursday in Zebulon for just about an hour after a crash near N.C. Highway 97.
A State Highway Patrol spokesman said a man driving at a high rate of speed went off the road, hit some trees, went airborne and was trapped inside his crumpled car for about 40 minutes until emergency workers could free him from the wreckage.
Authorities said the driver, whose name they did not release, was wearing a seatbelt and it likely saved his life.
He was taken to WakeMed and was charged with reckless driving.
