Crews Tackle Hot Spots in Durham Motel Fire

Posted July 17, 2007

— Crews put out the hot spots of a lingering fire at an abandoned motel in Durham early Tuesday morning.

On Sunday, firefighters were called out to the Duke Inn, a former Days Inn motel on Redwood Road.

The fire originated from at least two different spots, which is very suspicious, according to arson investigators with the Durham's Sheriff's Department.

Durham police that this fire was the third suspicious blaze at the motel since January 2005. The two previous fires were determined to be arson, and investigators said this one was also intentionally set.

What a waste of water? Have you ever considered that a structure that has already burned 3 times would be unsafe to allow firefighters and onlookers to sit and watch burn? When you drove by did you notice it was collapsing as well as surrounded by woods and homes? Have you considered the fact that our area is under drought conditions and a small spark could ignite a larger fire? As a neighbor I agree that this business has been an issue for over 30 years and an eyesore and hazard for the last six months or more. However, risking lives of firefighters and nearby homes is not the solution to a problem structure. Drive by there now...it is gone. And it seems to me that it finally became the decision of Durham County to demolish the structure and not an effort to cover evidence. Thank you Durham County Fire and Emergency Mgt. for a job well done.

We drove by there Sunday while it was burning. What a waste of water. They should have let it burn down completlely. Why risk firefighters lives?

Personally think it should have been cleaned up years ago...it has been sitting there...eye sore...for way to long.

Mr Natural, I remember something with the same name back in the 70's . . . .

I think it left me in smoldering ruins as well . . .

A contractor working for the motel's owners told investigators that the remaining structures would be demolished Monday night.

The owner is planning a speedy cleanup. Is he being responsible or covering up evidence?

Was it insured for any amount of money? May have been the holding company - if not maybe the hoodlums.
