CLAYTON, N.C. — The body of a Clayton man was recovered from a Johnston County pond Tuesday morning, hours after his boat capsized, authorities said.

Michael Jerome Nichols, 44, of 1000 S. Lombard, was found dead in a pond in the Plantation Point subdivision at about 10:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Nichols had been fishing with two other men Monday night when the boat they were in started to take in water and capsized, authorities said. There were no life jackets on the boat.

The other two men were able to made it to shore, authorities said.

Firefighters from the Wendell and Eastern Wake fire departments assisted in the search.

Authorities said alcohol was found on the boat. But they said they wouldn't know if Nichols was intoxicated until an autopsy is completed.
