— Emergency crews responded to a fire inside Kenan Labs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill late Sunday.

Upon arriving at the fourth floor, crews encountered smoke and fire coming from room B427 around 10:30 p.m. The blaze was extinguished and under control by 11 p.m., according to fire officials.

UNC Health and Safety and the lab's professor were contacted for information about chemicals inside the room. UNC Fire Marshal Billy Mitchell confirmed that the chemicals were organic and caused no threat for crews inside.

The scene was then turned over to UNC Health and Safety for clean up and investigation for the cause and origin of the fire. No other information was released.

I agree with OakRapp, just because it's "organic" doesn't mean it's good for you especially when you're talking organic CHEMISTRY. Way back in the day when I took a couple semesters of organic chem and their associated labs, there was a lot of stuff that could seriously harm you if you came into contact with it or breathed it in. I'm glad the particular organic chemicals involved last night were not a threat to the firefighters.

"Maybe they borrowed the chemicals from NCSU's football team? They got smoked Saturday."

41-30 is getting "smoked" in football?

    I didn't stutter did I?

I'm not sure about that specific lab, but most of the labs in Kenan have little to no chemicals in them overnight when no one is doing experiments.

Perhaps it was the ring of fire formerly known as UNC Football...

We both know that the UNC football team would have nothing to do with anything that happened inside of a classroom or lab!

Wow. Wonder whether the fire marshal or the reporter made the "organic = good for you" mental link? Do they think the chems were supplied by Whole Foods? I sure wouldn't want to be downwind from a blazing organic chem lab.

The football team is to blame. They smoked the scoreboard Saturday.
