RALEIGH, N.C. — A jewelry store at Crabtree Valley Mall was robbed Monday afternoon after three men with hammers smashed jewelry cases and ran off with merchandise.

Raleigh police responded to Sidney Thomas Jewelers at 3:16 p.m.

A woman named Sandra, who did not want to use her last name, heard the glass display cases being smashed. She initially thought they were gunshots.

Moments later, one of the suspects passed Sandra.

She grabbed his arm to stop him.

"I couldn't hold on to him...(he) threw me to the ground," she said.

Her knee was injured by the fall.

The suspects left a short trail of stolen watches on their way out.

Investigators said they do not have a good description of the suspects.

Only one other person tried to stop the men, she said.

"I think people do not want to get involved," she said. "That is what is wrong with the world today. People need to step up."
