RALEIGH, N.C. — A group of workers at a north Raleigh bagel shop banded together to buy a car for co-worker.

Employees and customers of the Bruegger's Bagels on Strickland Road knew Shirley Ratliff was walking miles each day to get to a bus stop and ride to work.

She's been saving for a car, but recent medical issues, and their accompanying bills, had eaten into her savings.

David Burton, who led the fundraising drive, said it was no problem finding people willing to help.

"When I asked them to contribute, they didn't even blink. As a matter of fact, they said, 'How much do you want?' And they said they would give 100, 200. That just goes to show you that the Christmas spirit is alive and well in Raleigh, NC!"

Ratliff was bowled over by the surprise when her car was delivered on Monday.

"I love these people," she said. "I just didn't know that they would go to this extreme to do something like this."
