Court overturns restitution for Pine Level killing

Pine Level, N.C. — The North Carolina Court of Appeals on Tuesday reversed an order that a man convicted of killing a friend must pay $10,000 restitution to his victim's family.
The appeals court upheld the conviction and sentence for Stefan Gudac, of Pine Level, who was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the Nov. 27, 2010, death of Devin Barber.
The only thing changed was the amount Gudac must pay to Barber's family. He'll have another hearing to determine what, if any, amount he will owe.
Pine Level Police Chief Keith Sparks said Barber and Gudac, both in their early 20s, had been friends since boyhood. The pair argued at a party at Gudac's house and fought after Gudac said he tried to get Barber to leave.
