Court challenge could be next for NC elections changes

Posted July 26, 2013

Attorney General Roy Cooper has urged Gov. Pat McCrory to veto the sweeping elections changes passed this week by the North Carolina General Assembly.

House Bill 589 will not only require voters to show valid identification, it also cuts the early voting period from 17 to 10 days, prohibits counties from extending early voting hours on the Saturday before Election Day and eliminates same-day voter registration during early voting.

Cooper says the bill will make it harder for North Carolinians to vote.

The attorney general wrote, "With a veto, you can encourage more people to be involved in the political process, stop this bad public policy, and prevent the confusion and cost of a legal battle."

Cooper says he expects a legal challenge from the federal government.

Congressman G.K. Butterfield, D-District 1, is also mounting an effort to block sweeping changes to election laws. He too sent a letter to the governor urging a veto. Butterfield said if McCrory signs the bill into law, he will ask the U.S. Attorney General to challenge it.

"The democrats that were previously elected were so corrupt that we kicked their rears out of office, if they didn't have legal problems or were already locked up."

That's baloney and you know it. Again, if those Democrats are so corrupt and all these dead people are voting for them like you folks claim, there is no way they would lose an election. Your claims have been debunked by nothing less than reality itself.

"McCrory and the Republicans represent the party, not the people"...tracmiser

"Seems to me that the people elected them....wanna explain that?" - karmageddon

No, I don't want to explain that, because I have explained it a thousand times before to ill-informed posters like you. Explain it to YOURSELF this time! Go to your favorite search engine, and search on "actual results from North Carolina state legislature election 2012" or "North Carolina + 2012 + gerrymandering". I believe that you can do this, if you put your mind to it.

"Some of you folks who really support this, answer me one question: if voter fraud is so rampant and the Democrats have cheated themselves into office, then how in the world did the Republicans win both houses of the legislature and the Governor's mansion?..."

    jelad612 easy question.
The democrats that were previously elected were so corrupt that we kicked their rears out of office, if they didn't have legal problems or were already locked up.

And guess what, you as Attorney General will defend the State of North Carolina in those legal challenges.

We have heard several people state on the news that they have no way to get to places to get a free ID or what is needed to get a free ID, but each of these people have managed to get locked up on MONDAY NIGHT. What is wrong here, get locked up, but can not get to the place to get a FREE ID.

" they just won the last election fairly. Where are you getting your information? I have never, never seen a party that lost whine and cry about everything that the new administration has done and what they propose to do."

You've obviously never seen any Republicans in Congress after President Obama was elected. That's ALL they have done for the past 4.5 years.

Some of you folks who really support this, answer me one question: if voter fraud is so rampant and the Democrats have cheated themselves into office, then how in the world did the Republicans win both houses of the legislature and the Governor's mansion? After this has been implemented and the Democrats regain control in Raleigh, what will your excuse be then?

Republican NCGA hasn't provided evidence that any problem exists that would be resolved with their 9 point voter suppression bill. Every reasonable citizen knows these measures are inherently wrong.

Hey Roy Cooper, give it up. McCrory and the Republicans represent the party, not the people. They are going to do whatever it takes to retain control whether it's ethical or not. There are only three things to do: vote them out, sue them to defeat legislation, or boycott all Republican businesses because with this party it's all about the Benjamins.
