ERWIN, N.C. — A Linden couple was killed Tuesday afternoon after their vehicle crashed on N.C. Highway 217 at Slash Drive, located four miles south of Erwin.

The vehicle, driven by Odell Surles, 68, was speeding when it ran off the road to the right, hit a ditch, hit a tree, hit a fire hydrant and then hit another tree before coming to rest, state troopers said.

Surles and his wife, Annie, 54, were pronounced dead at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident, said investigators, who added there was no indication as to why Odell Surles was speeding.
