RALEIGH, N.C. — From Coach purses to Nike Air Jordan sneakers and Gucci shoes, investigators seized 1,593 knockoffs during a raid at a Raleigh store.

Investigators obtained a search warrant Sept. 9 for EZ Jeans at 1807 Garner Road. The retail value of the merchandise seized from the store was estimated at $250,000, according to search warrants.

"It is vital because this is stealing … stealing from the legitimate manufacture,” North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall said.

The raid came after investigators said they received tips from residents that the store was selling counterfeit items.

In 2004, the North Carolina Anti-Counterfeit Trademark Task Force was established to train law-enforcement officers to spot knockoffs since the merchandise is often hard to detect.

Consumer Reports offers advice on detecting counterfeit items on its Web site.
