Cost to clear roads could rise

The DOT reports the price of salt used to keep roads safe has more than tripled from this time last year.
In a typical winter, the department uses about 55,000 tons of salt on North Carolina roads. It has 150,000 tons of salt in storage. But if the weather gets too messy, the state will have to buy salt – at the higher price.
