Cooper signs bill reducing size of UNC Board of Governors

The UNC Board of Governors meeting on Friday was interrupted by protesters after it was moved from Asheville to Chapel Hill due to concerns about other potential protests.

— Gov. Roy Cooper on Friday signed the first bill to make it to his desk since he became governor.

House Bill 39 will reduce the size of the University of North Carolina system Board of Governors from 32 members to 24 members.

Although the measure passed with bipartisan support in the General Assembly, it did have opposition. In particular, opponents worried that graduates and others with connections to historically black colleges and universities would have a harder time getting appointed to a slimmed-down board.

There are no other bills pending on Cooper's desk at this time.
